Over the course of more than twenty years, the ophthalmology team at Auckland University has expanded from just a couple of lecturers to a vibrant department boasting several professors who are now at the forefront of ground-breaking research.Among them is Professor Trevor Sherwin, who has been at the helm of a group of PhD researchers dedicated to creating an eye drop that has the potential to heal the cornea.
This initiative has now evolved into a start-up company that is preparing to launch clinical trials within 12 months.
The ophthalmology department at the university, which also houses the National Eye Bank, is actively pursuing other innovative projects focused on utilising stem cells to regenerate eye tissue.
