We are delighted to share that the Third Version of Doughnut Refractive Lenticule Technique has been successfully performed for the management of advanced Keratoconus.
This refined technique incorporates a double-lenticule approach:
‣ Globe-derived doughnut lenticule (~200 µm).
‣ SMILE-derived lenticule (35–40 µm).
In this version, only the central 4-mm portion of the SMILE-derived lenticule was implanted. This modification was designed to preserve the negative meniscus behaviour of the implant by maintaining the SMILE lenticule thickness at approximately 40 µm, while compensating for the reduced central thickness through a corresponding increase in the thickness of the globe-derived doughnut lenticule. The aim is to optimise corneal biomechanics while maintaining the desired optical profile.
This represents another step in the continued evolution of this technique as we strive to improve safety, reproducibility, and visual outcomes for patients with advanced keratoconus.
