Mission Viejo News (Orange County, CA): Young Fitness Enthusiast Ryan Murphy Overcomes Rare Eye Disease

I learned about iLink® from my doctors, and it really changed my outlook because there was something I could do about [my progressive keratoconus].”

Ryan Murphy, age 23

Ryan Murphy was a student at California State University, Northridge when he noticed that he was having trouble seeing the board during lectures and while driving at night. As someone who is passionate about prioritizing his health and well-being, he became worried when his vision issues started to impact his day-to-day life.

Thinking he simply needed glasses or LASIK surgery to solve the problem, Ryan made an appointment with his eye doctor. Dr. Aaron Sako at La Paz Optometric Center in Laguna Hills could tell right away that there was something more going on with Ryan’s vision. He diagnosed Ryan with progressive keratoconus in both eyes and referred him to a specialist, Dr. Duna Raoof at NVision, for further evaluation. Dr. Raoof recommended Ryan be treated with the iLink® FDA-approved cross-linking procedure to slow or halt the progression of his keratoconus and help preserve his vision. Understanding the urgency to undergo treatment as soon as possible to avoid further vision loss, Ryan received the procedure in both eyes in 2021.

Now, Ryan enjoys his active lifestyle without having to worry about his condition continuing to progress. He also aims to help others living with progressive keratoconus understand the importance of timely treatment. Ryan and Dr. Raoof recently spoke with the Mission Viejo Newspaper to discuss their experiences with progressive keratoconus and the iLink® cross-linking procedure. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor to determine if iLink may be right for you. You can read the full story below.
