Prevalence is Higher than Previously Believed

Dr. Elise Kramer from the Miami and Western Contact Lens Institutes emphasizes the crucial role of early detection in managing keratoconus, a progressive corneal condition that can significantly impact vision if left undiagnosed.

Keratoconus often presents with myopia and astigmatism, which can easily be mistaken for more common refractive errors. This is why Dr. Kramer stresses the importance of a thorough examination, starting with a manifest refraction.

Corneal topography is the gold standard for detecting keratoconus. By mapping the curvature of the cornea, this diagnostic tool helps eye care professionals identify early signs of the condition, enabling timely intervention.

According to recent studies, the prevalence of keratoconus is higher than previously believed, with an estimated 1 in 334 people affected. This highlights the importance of keeping keratoconus on your radar when assessing patients with visual complaints.

Early detection and management can prevent progression, ultimately leading to a better quality of life for our patients.
